I bought an Israeli Gas Mask, can I attach the filter to the mask during storage or will it go bad?

I know it will go bad if you open the seal on the bottom (inlet) of the filter, but will it also go bad if you just attach it to the mask? I would like to think it would be faster and easier to start wearing it without having to attach the filter during an actual emergency. Can it be stored this way safely?
